Mexico is one of the world's major producers of beans, with a long history of bean cultivation, which occupies a central position in its food culture. According to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Mexico's annual bean production is about 1.2 million to 1.5 million tons, ranking among the top ten in the world, of which about 70% are common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), common varieties include black beans (frijol negro), pinto beans (pinto beans) and red kidney beans (flor de mayo), and a small amount of chickpeas and lima beans are also grown.

Although the government has promoted drought-resistant varieties and water-saving technologies through the "National Bean Program", fluctuations in production still require Mexico to import about 200,000 tons per year from the United States, Canada and other countries to supplement demand.
Beans are an important source of protein in the Mexican diet, with an annual per capita consumption of about 10 kilograms.
